Rest and recuperate
Someone may need quiet, sleep, space and very little expected of them for a few days - simply time to breathe and recharge their batteries.
Into the West
Into the West is the RUSS experience on Arran: a restorative break for people with a history of rough sleeping, shaped around the person from the first conversation and planning through to the journey west and the time on the island.
What it actually is
Into the West begins on the Isle of Arran, where RUSS is building a supportive community that brings together people with lived experience of rough sleeping, frontline workers and local island residents.
The purpose is simple: give somebody a genuine restorative break, in beautiful surroundings, with enough choice and support for the time away to meet what they actually need. There are deliberately no rigid goals or targets for a visit.
Different people require different things - and that is the point.

No standard itinerary
These are examples, not packages. The experience is planned around the individual rather than asking the individual to fit a pre-designed retreat.
Someone may need quiet, sleep, space and very little expected of them for a few days - simply time to breathe and recharge their batteries.
Another person may want to walk, explore, see the sights, spend time outdoors and experience Arran through the eyes of people who know and love the island.
Shared meals, conversations, activities or a gathering with people who have similar experiences may be exactly what somebody wants. At times that could include a women-only gathering.
The experience starts before Arran
Some people may not have had a break for many years. Choosing what they want from the visit, being involved in the planning and looking forward to the journey can be meaningful in its own right.
RUSS wants the travelling, anticipation and sense of heading somewhere different to be part of the experience - not just the practical means of getting to the destination.
A journey filled with excitement, anticipation and hope.

More than time away
Different surroundings can bring out hidden hopes, dreams and aspirations. RUSS hopes a visit can create breathing space to think about what comes next without pretending a few days away can solve everything.
The hope is that the journey is a beginning rather than an isolated holiday: people who take part can remain connected to a community whose relationships are able to stretch across distance.
Billgrimages
A Billgrimage is RUSS's name for a meaningful journey to the wild and wonderful west coast, Highlands and islands of Scotland. The word grew from Bill's story and from the idea that the journey itself can carry excitement, anticipation and hope.
Bill experienced hard times, including periods of street homelessness and addiction. His path eventually brought him west, helped by connections he made along the way. There he became part of a community in which he was loved and valued.
In later life, with support from the people around him, Bill achieved a long-held dream of moving to the Isle of Skye.
His story is an inspiration for what can grow through community, inclusion, friendship and connection with nature.
How visits are developing
Into the West grew from two static caravans on Arran bought with RUSS in mind. Lindsay lives in one; the other created a practical base from which free holidays and respite could begin to be offered to people coming from cities.
RUSS is now recruiting more people around the project and seeking funding and donations so visiting guests can be welcomed well and the experience can grow carefully.
Help make the experience possible
Time, local knowledge, lifts, meals, activities, spare rooms, services, fundraising and donations can all become part of the experience.
